The Chef's Handbook

Before you bake, you must know your measurements. Use this cheat sheet to decode any order!

The Numerator (Top Number)

This is how many pieces we are serving, eating, or taking away.

The Denominator (Bottom Number)

This is the Total number of pieces in the whole tray or pie.

Halves: Cut into 2
Fourths: Cut into 4
Thirds: Cut into 3
Eighths: Cut into 8

Kitchen Briefing

Watch how the Head Chef handles equal parts. In this kitchen, every slice must be the same size!

The "Not" Rule

Sometimes, customers ask for what is left over. You have to subtract to find the Numerator!

Example: "Chef cut a pie into 8 slices. We sold 3. What fraction is NOT sold?"

1. Total pieces = 8 (Denominator)
2. 8 minus 3 = 5 (Numerator)
3. Answer = $\frac{5}{8}$
