Building and Breaking Numbers

In this lab, we look at numbers in two ways. We can break them down into the numbers that multiply to make them (Factors), or we can build them up by skip-counting (Multiples).

Definitions

Think of Factors as the "ingredients" and Multiples as the "results."

ConceptDefinitionExample (LaTeX)
Factors Numbers you multiply together to get another number. Factors of $12$: $\{1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12\}$
Multiples The product of a number and any whole number (skip-counting). Multiples of $3$: $\{3, 6, 9, 12, 15...\}$
Prime A number with exactly two factors: 1 and itself. $7$ is prime because only $1 \times 7 = 7$.
Composite A number with more than two factors. $8$ is composite: $\{1, 2, 4, 8\}$.
