Expressions vs. Equations
Expressions and equations are the building blocks of algebra! Knowing the difference is key:
- An **Expression** is a mathematical phrase containing numbers, variables, and operations, but **no** equal sign (e.g., $4x + 7$). You **evaluate** or **simplify** it.
- An **Equation** is a statement that two expressions are equal (e.g., $4x + 7 = 19$). It **must** have an equal sign ($=$). You **solve** it to find the variable's value.

Equations are like a balancing scale! What you do to one side, you must do to the other to keep it balanced. Let's solve $$x + 3 = 8$$ 🎥
Practice Problems
Try to solve these one-step equations by isolating the variable. Remember to balance the sides!
1) $$x + 12 = 20$$
2) $$y - 5 = 15$$
3) $$3z = 21$$
4) $$\frac{w}{4} = 5$$
